About us

Who We Are

Daraja Reube Mbororo Development Association (DAREM) is a non-profit organization founded in 2015 and was legally authorized in 2019 under the Cameroon law on Association with registration number: 416/G.37/C.34/VOLI/SASC. DAREM is on a mission to promote and protect the right of indigenous Mbororo people as well as other vulnerable populations for a peaceful and sustainable living.

The Mbororo are a semi-nomadic, predominantly Muslim ethnic group found in countries like Cameroon, Central African Republic, and Chad. DAREM was established by a Mbororo women Zainab Abdullahi an activists and allies who recognizes the severe challenges faced by the Mbororo community especially women and girls, including issues like early marriage, lack of access to education and healthcare, and discrimination. Being a survivor of pain of early marriage, she sought to create DAREM that would advocate for the rights of the Mbororo while also supporting community-driven development initiatives.

Meeting the needs of the Vulnerable Communities

Initially, DAREM focuses 70% of its efforts in supporting the Mbororo people and the remaining 30% on other vulnerable populations. In the Mbororo communities, DAREM handles issues specifically through encouraging their access healthcare services and promoting mobile healthcare clinics to serve remote Mbororo communities, providing economic empowerment for women and girls, providing scholarships to enable Mbororo youth to access education as while as run adult literacy programs, climate change adaptation, and peacebuilding. It has expanded its scope to also address issues like gender equality, sexual reproductive health and right, targeting internally displaced persons and young women and girls.

In conformity with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, DAREM focuses on Goal

  4. Gender equality.

 With these, DAREM has been able and is still carrying out different activities in the related area. Today, DAREM is continues to be led by a multicultural board and staff of Mbororo and non-Mbororo, ensuring the organization’s priorities align with the self-determined needs of the Mbororo community and the larger communities. It is considered a model of equitable, grassroots-led development in Central Africa.

The core values that bind DAREM are: Respect for Diversity and Humanity, Integrity, Transparency and Accountability.

  1. To promote the economic empowerment of Mbororo women and girls living in the grass roots.
  2. To fight against child marriage and harmful traditional practices in the Mbororo communities both in urban and grassroots areas.
  3. To advocate for the right of women and girls especially in minority groups.
  4. To fight against GBV and inequalities that exists in the Mbororo communities.
  5. To promote regenerative agriculture amongst indigenous people.
  6. Encourage peace building initiatives at grassroots level.
